The Health care and social assistance industry is the largest employer of the Rural City of Wangaratta.

Over 2,400 people are directly employed in this industry accounting for 19.4% of employment available within the municipality.

The industry generates 19.6% of total salaries and wages earnt in the region.

Health care and social assistance is the fourth largest industry locally in terms of economic output generating around $327 million per annum. It has developed to be one of the largest and strongest industries in the Rural City of Wangaratta with location quotient data analysis showing it to be a key industry of the future.

The industry requires an educated and skilled workforce which is drawn both from within the local community and other municipalities. The continued development of the tertiary education sector in Wangaratta seeks to positively increase local education levels to facilitate the growing demand of the local health industry.

Expansion of the health care and social services industry is anticipated and the Rural City of Wangaratta is working on a Health Precinct Strategy to facilitate this.

Wangaratta’s historical role as regional health centre, and position and close proximity to the Hume Freeway ensures the base for the continued growth of this industry.

Northeast Health Wangaratta

Northeast Health Wangaratta (NHW) is a leading Victorian health service committed to providing quality health care to more than 90,000 people across North East Victoria.

NHW are the major referral facility for people with complex health needs from Bright, Mansfield, Beechworth, Myrtleford, Yarrawonga, Euroa and Benalla. NHW also provide a telehealth service to these smaller facilities, allowing doctors to provide medical advice via video link.

NHW has a 24/7 Emergency Department and offers an extensive range of healthcare services as well as our residential aged care facility, Illoura.

Wangaratta Private Hospital

Wangaratta Private Hospital provides an extensive range of services that are readily accessible for both the local community and as a referral centre.

Speciality surgeries include orthopaedic, joint replacement, obesity, along with general surgery, general medicine, plastics, urology, ear nose and throat, oral/maxillofacial, ophthalmology, gynaecology and endoscopy.
